Q: What is the Fashion Industry Association (“FIA”)?
FIA is a student organization at the University of Southern California, administered through the USC Marshall Business School. FIA, the only fashion organization on the USC campus aims to educate the student body about various aspects of the fashion industry through guest speakers and interactive events, planned by the FIA executive board throughout the USC academic school year.
Q: What does FIA do?
FIA serves the student community as a resource for education and opportunities in the fashion industry. FIA allows all USC students to learn from fashion industry professionals on a monthly basis at speaker sessions, gain access to a network of USC students interested in the field of fashion, and provides notices of fashion internships and job openings. FIA is designed to give each member a comprehensive view of today’s fashion landscape. Among the various events hosted by FIA, the most significant are the fashion recruiter reception, which occurs in the fall, and the fashion show in the spring.
Q: Can anyone join FIA?
All USC students are eligible to join FIA. Any student interested in the fashion industry is encouraged to become a general member. However, to become a part of our internal board and participate as an e-board member, you must apply and go through an interview process. Current internal board applications are available under the “join us” tab on this website.
Q: Is there a cost to join?
Yes. There is a $25 membership fee each semester for general membership.
Q: What do I gain by becoming a member?
FIA members gain access to monthly panels featuring professionals from the fashion industry, regularly receive exclusive information about job and internship opportunities, have early access to our Fashion Recruiter Reception, assist in the planning of our annual Spring Fashion Show, attend off-campus tours and events, and have the opportunity to connect with other likeminded students.
Q: What is the FIA Fashion Recruiter Reception?
Held every November, the Fashion Recruiter Reception is FIA’s largest fall semester event. Executives and recruiters from various fashion companies meet with students about internship and career openings at their respective companies. While this event is open to all USC students, members are given exclusive early access to the fashion company executives and recruiters. Companies participating in the Fashion Recruiter Reception have included Rachel Zoe, Rodarte, Guess, BB Dakota, BCBG, The Workshop LA, Basic Magazine and many others.
Q: What is the FIA Fashion Show?
The FIA Fashion Show, hosted every March, is FIA’s largest spring semester event. FIA invites professional and student fashion designers to present their collections to the USC community. FIA encourages every member to assist the FIA executive board in planning and running the fashion show. Help is needed in all areas, including working on hair and makeup with models, interfacing with the fashion designers, and organizing logistics for the event. Previous participating designers include SIWY denim, Drip Swimwear, Cosmogyral, My Stylist LA, and many more.
Q: What are member exclusive events?
FIA plans educational, fun, interactive member exclusive events throughout the academic school year. Past events include field trips to SIWY's manufacturing headquarters, fashion sample sales, movie nights featuring fashion themed films.
Q: Where and when are meetings held?
General FIA members have no obligation to attend meetings. Professional Panels will be held monthly on Wednesday nights and off-campus events will be held on Fridays. If interested, your membership will grant you access to the panel. Internal board member meetings are held every Wednesday from 7-8pm on the USC campus and are mandatory for board members.
Q: Who are speakers that have addressed FIA meetings in the past?
FIA has featured a large variety of speakers over the years. Recently, FIA has hosted representatives from Hudson Jeans, Ban.dō, Rachel Zoe Inc., Girl Boss, BB Dakota, Golf Wang, and John Elliott.

You can keep up with FIA happenings through FIA’s weekly newsletter, Facebook, and Instagram. Additionally, every FIA member is included in a Facebook group detailing every FIA event and other pertinent information.

Q: Does FIA collaborate with other USC student clubs?
FIA is always open to working with other USC student organizations. Most recently, FIA collaborated with the USC Photography Club at a fashion shoot in downtown Los Angeles.
